PRP vs mesotherapy

Two popular non-surgical hair treatments differ in mechanism, ingredients and best-use cases. Which is right for you?

Among non-surgical hair treatments, one of the most common questions we hear is: "PRP or mesotherapy?" Both methods are used to slow hair loss and revitalise follicles, but they differ in mechanism, ingredients and the cases they suit best. In this article we compare the two treatments clearly to help you understand which might be the right choice for you.

What is PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)?

In PRP therapy a small sample of your blood is centrifuged to separate the platelet-rich plasma. This plasma is then injected into the scalp with fine needles. Platelets are rich in growth factors, which are used to stimulate stem cells, accelerate cellular repair and reactivate miniaturised follicles. Because PRP is derived entirely from your own blood, it carries no risk of allergy or foreign-substance reaction.

What is mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy is the injection of custom blends of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and, in many beneficial cases, DHT inhibitors directly into the scalp. These blends may be ready-made preparations or compounded by the physician to suit the patient's needs. The main goal of mesotherapy is to support follicular nutrition and reduce shedding.

The core differences

The two methods are often confused, but they are distinct. The following points will help you decide:

  • Source: PRP comes from your own blood; mesotherapy uses a prepared blend
  • Mechanism: PRP stimulates stem cells via growth factors; mesotherapy delivers nutrients
  • Indication: PRP has stronger evidence in androgenetic alopecia; mesotherapy stands out in nutrition-related loss
  • Frequency: Both typically involve 4-6 sessions; annual maintenance sessions are recommended

Which is right for you?

The right treatment depends on the right diagnosis. Once your hair-loss type has been identified through trichoscopy and any necessary blood tests, the most suitable method is chosen. PRP is usually preferred for male-pattern loss, while mesotherapy tends to come to the fore in stress- or nutrition-related shedding. For many patients, combining the two treatments delivers the best result.

Who is not suitable?

Like any treatment, PRP and mesotherapy are not suitable for everyone. In the following situations these treatments should be postponed or modified:

  • Active scalp infection or inflammatory hair disorder
  • Bleeding disorders or use of blood-thinning medication (requires prior assessment)
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Severe liver or kidney disease
  • History of malignancy in the treatment area

When these factors are present, alternative medical treatments or an appropriate timeline for a hair transplant are planned. At our clinic, every patient's medical history is reviewed in detail before treatment, with referral to the relevant specialist where needed. We always prioritise patient safety over treatment speed, and so we plan in a way that minimises the risk of side effects after the procedure.

Conclusion and expectation management

Neither PRP nor mesotherapy is a "hair in one session" solution; both require patience and consistency. The first visible results generally appear after 2-3 months, and durable improvement is seen at around 6 months. With appropriate patient selection and the right session frequency, these treatments are among the most powerful tools in non-surgical hair restoration. Always consult a specialist before deciding; the wrong choice can lead not only to wasted time and money, but also to overlooking a different underlying cause. A treatment that starts correctly delivers the right result; the first step therefore always passes through an accurate diagnosis.
